Mid-Autumn: Tokyo’s Time to Shine

It’s such a great time to be in Tokyo right now. The whole city seems to be bathed in glistening sunshine. It’s like when you take out an old piece of jewellery and give it a polish–it transforms into something incredible before your very eyes.

The autumn colours keep getting more and more intense, and the weather has been incredible—sunny and not too cold. In the past few days, the majority of ginkgo trees have turned completely yellow, and the momiji have finally started turning red. I love seeing that perfection gradation from green to orange to red on the same leaf. Nature is amazing, isn’t it!

Over the weekend, I visited a few of my favourite places. I went back to Jingu Gaien’s ginkgo avenue again and it was the busiest I’ve seen it in a long time. I went to the much quieter Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park in Hiroo where the momiji are just starting to change. It will be amazing in about another week I’d say. And I also went to my favourite neighbourhood temple, Gotoku-ji in Setagaya. I love living so close to this place, and I’m sure I’ve taken a million photos of it but it never gets old!

I hear parts of the northern hemisphere are already well into winter and receiving plenty of snow, while Australia is currently experiencing an extraordinary heat wave. What’s the view and weather like where you are at the moment?

      1. Depends on the winter, but generally knee deep, but occasionally, mid-thigh. Overall, maybe 60″ of snow falls, but it melts and settles, so we’re not buried. :) We can get big storms in March, but by then, day temps melt it quickly.

    1. Thanks so much, Lyn. There are so many beautiful spots everywhere. I love seeing Tokyo shed its summer coat every year, especially at gardens with ponds like the one you pointed out! Have you caught some autumn colours on your travels around the world?

      1. The weather is pretty crazy now days, seems like all over the world. Brisbane is already too hot for me, I could not stay in Cairns. I know that being near the water helps though with the sea breezes. Am glad I started to follow you, I enjoy your writing. Lyn

  1. Well Melbourne has been having lots of rain, but that shouldn’t surprise you haha. Great shots Celia and yes Japan is the place to be right now. Lovely pics, especially the temple shot with the green and red leaves – such a good combination. Is the street shot at bottom left in the Roppongi area? Keep polishing the jewellry.

    1. Haha, no surprise there at all! Melbourne is always the odd one out. The bottom middle pic is Roppongi Hills… the left side pic is in Azabujuban, right outside the Australian Embassy actually. Unbelievable shade of orange!
