2018: Changes, Hard Work and Happy Moments

Six years. It’s been almost six years since I moved to Tokyo (and even longer since I moved to Japan). They say time flies when you’re having fun, and they would be right. In Japan, time seems to move so rapidly that it’s like you’re constantly on a treadmill watching the world whizz by.

Christmas Comes to the Westin

It’s Christmas Eve! This month, I went on a search for the best Christmas decorations in Tokyo. We all know Japan’s winter lights, called illuminations in Japanese, are outstanding, but they don’t have much to do with December 25th. I didn’t come across any nativity scenes but I did find one enchanting display in Ebisu.

The Last Autumn of Heisei

Here in Japan, we are coming to the end of an era. The Heisei era. The traditional way of counting years in Japan is based on the length of reign of the emperor. Emperor Akihito took over the throne in January 1989, marking the end of the Showa Period and the beginning of the Heisei Period. In Heisei 31 (2019), the emperor has planned to pass the baton onto his son, making way for a new era.

Tokyo’s Chic Treehouse Cafe

Located between Ebisu and Roppongi, Hiroo is the perfect mix of its two more prominent neighbours. It has a trendy, upscale vibe and a strong international presence due to all the embassies in the area. There are also always lots of children about who attend the local Japanese and international schools. Hiroo’s buzzing energy makes it a great place to hang out!

Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei: Ueno’s Secret Mansion

Tucked away behind Ueno Park is an exceptionally preserved piece of history. Unknown to not only many visitors but also local residents, the Kyu-Iwasaki-tei is an architecture-lover’s dream destination. With three beautiful buildings and a peaceful garden, this 19th century property deserves a lot more attention!

Delicious Japanese Dishes: Tonkatsu

It’s a classic comfort food. It’s simple yet has so much flavour. Tonkatsu is, simply, one of the best Japanese dishes! This pork dish is a loved by people of all ages in Japan and around the world; and while it’s available at restaurants all year round, the great thing is, with the right ingredients and technique it can just as easily be made at home.
